Have you ever thought to yourself, "I deserve a medal for this!"?  At some point in time in your military "spouse" career
you will face things your civilian sisters will never face.  I have met so many women that are so deserving of their own
special award.  This military life full of moves, deployments, long hours for little pay is not easily put into words.  It is an
experience that feels like you are the only one going through it.  Yet we all come together in the good times and the bad.
We make the most of what we have and know to enjoy every day given to us.

We think you do deserve an award.  You've earned it.  The world should know it.
Joanna's story.....

My first deployment started eight weeks after the birth of my second son.  I can't say I was altogether thrilled with the
idea but thought to myself, what if everyone in this country said no?  No I will not protect this amazing country.  No I don't
feel like leaving my wife and children.  No I will not put myself in harm's way to defend their futures.  The thought made
me shudder.  Someone has to say yes.  And I was never more proud, and certainly never more sad than the night my
husband shipped out.

The days were long, the nights even longer.   Explaining where Daddy was became increasingly difficult.  But I learned
a lot that first deployment.  I learned how to get that lawn mower started and get the yard done during nap times.  I
learned how to lay a patio, one paver at a time.  I learned how to ask for and offer help when needed.

By my second deployment, I was a pro.  And it got me to thinking...what about all the accomplishments
you do, what
about all the families out there who support their son, their brother, their father?  How can we recognize all that we have
done, how can we recognize all that you have done?

One day, I looked at my husband's chest (now, now ladies) as he was leaving for work and a light bulb went off.

Meanwhile, out in the desert...

Marcus' story......

There I was, on my way home from my third contingency deployment, thanking God for this opportunity and wanting to
bring back something special for my wife.  Not only had she taken excellent care of the kids, sent me countless care
packages (should have bought stock in Starbucks!) and letters,  but she also held an office in the battalion's support
group, ran a mom's and tot's group, fixed the dishwasher, sold the house and did all the PCS legwork for our next duty
station.

The military does well when awarding for the accomplishments of its service members and I am honored to have been
recognized.   But what could I get my wife that would be an adequate 'thank you' for all she had done?  As I went to buy
her a necklace, a light bulb went off.
